Abstract

This study aims to understand the motivation of persons with disabilities in overcoming academic barriers in higher education. Using a phenomenological approach and descriptive qualitative method, five participants from various disability backgrounds in Palopo City were interviewed in depth. The findings reveal both intrinsic motivation (aspirations, self-reliance) and extrinsic motivation (support from parents, peers, and campus environment). The challenges faced include physical limitations, campus accessibility, financial constraints, and social stigma. Participants overcame these barriers through technology use, self-adjustment, time management, and social support. The study contributes to the development of more inclusive and humane higher education policies.
