Abstract

This research seeks to examine the improvement in the math critical thinking abilities of eighth-grade middle school students using a problem-solving instructional approach. This research was conducted at Al-Hasanah Cikalongwetan Middle School Boarding School, West Bandung. For this research, the researchers embraced a design approach that was akin to an experiment. The complete class VIII was used as the population, and they were chosen based on certain traits, namely when choosing the experimental and control classes not chosen randomly but with classes provided by the school. The tool employed is a test for critical thinking skills presented as essay questions, consisting of 5 items designed The normalcy test and the Mann-Whitney test are two data processing methods employed in this research, which are founded on the markers of critical thinking abilities. The findings indicate that students who apply the problem-solving approach demonstrate a greater degree of improvement in their capacity for critical thought in contrast to those who employ conventional teaching approaches.
