This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model in improving understanding of mathematical concepts among vocational high school students on matrix material. The method used in this study is quantitative with a quasi-experimental design, involving two groups, namely the experimental group that implemented the PBL model and the control group that used traditional learning methods. The research findings showed that there was a significant difference in the improvement of understanding of mathematical concepts between the two groups. The average Posttest score for the experimental group (7.57) was higher than the control group (4.72). The N-Gain analysis revealed that the improvement in understanding of mathematical concepts in the experimental group (0.62) was greater than the control group (0.38), although both groups were in the moderate improvement category. The results of the Independent Sample T-Test showed a p-Value = 0.000 < 0.05, which indicated that the improvement between the two groups was statistically significant.
